What exactly is a pathology ?

"Before you were informed of the existence of this "schizo affective disorder" you probably had no image about the subject, and you certainly had not considered to be affected by any "pathology" is isn't it ?"

To the question of a person seeking to better understand their psychological state... "I just found out that I have schizo affective disorder. What can I hope for in my life ? Is my life ruined ?" The answer was :

"Before you were informed of the existence of this "schizo affective disorder" you probably had no image about the subject, and you certainly had not considered to be affected by any "pathology" is isn't it ?"

Naming things that way suggests that you have some sort of illness. And then you begin to be overwhelmed by the weight of the description, the pathology, which tends to make the thing complex and technical. The term does not help to better understand, on the contrary, it stigmatizes and generates fear. First of all, it is necessary to set aside all the terminology and the abstract psycho-technical semantics preempted by the specialists of complexification. Let's be aware that the term, the description is never the thing described, it is only an image, a concept, and nothing more. None of this allows us to better understand our conflicts nor free ourselves from it, quite the contrary. It locks us up in some sort of statute, that's all.

It is also imperative to let go of the associated images, which condition us, and simply observe within ourselves the reactions and motivations, the fears and the contradictions. We only need to observe the facts without fleeing or condemning, without falling into ideas, theories and abstractions. Then we have to see the nature of the disorder, namely, the depressive tendency, that is to say the state of isolation.

Loneliness is one thing, isolation is something else. It is a form of inner confinement.

To understand the mechanism of the fear which results from it, is to free oneself from it. But what is this form of isolation and this need to flee and take refuge in yourself ? It is a quest for psychological security. But seeking security breeds insecurity. This is clearly a manifestation of ego and hyper-awareness. Thus thought erects walls in an attempt to protect itself, to keep at a distance any relational link. It is a form of psychological suicide.

What psychologists call schizophrenia is none other than the extreme state of internal isolation and the fear induced when one no longer has any connections to others. It is a consequence of the disproportionate importance that we give to what we are. When we observie the facts, we free ourself from it. We can then get out of our prison and start to live happily.
