We often consider fasting after excesses, to lose weight, or in order to free oneself from toxins accumulated over time. There are two ways of fasting. One is with great efforts, and the other easily. I speak knowingly... I fasted 5 days without ingesting anything, neither water nor food. I did it effortlessly, and here are the reasons. The greatest significance of such a step lies in the discovery of the ego and its insatiable need to be stimulated, recognized and strengthened. Fasting in itself is not a very complicated process, because the body has accumulated so much fat, water and toxins, that when we stop eating, it finds in itself all the resources to feed it for a long time.
Consuming one's own toxins, fats and water allows the body to get rid of it and regain unparalleled health and energy. However, the difficulty lies in understanding where the resistance comes from, and how it manifests itself.
Let's consider things like this : there is this flame in us which does not require any expression, and which is content to be. And then there is a noisy intruder whom you have not invited and whom craves for pleasures and sensations all the time. Once identified, the key lies in not responding to him, not giving continuity to the whims of the ego. So, when the latter's noise is heard, tell him that his constant complaints will not find any echo. Tell him that you will not respond to any of his childish requests. Let him know that you are no longer fooled. Deny him attention. Please do it, for you will discover something extra-ordinary : a quality of consciousness, emotional non-polluted energy never felt before.. You will find out what humility is, apart from unnecessary ego chatter.
And once the ego is muted, the fast can begin. It poses no more resistance, and it can last much longer than one can suspect.
But if you do not understand the nature of the ego, then it is a merciless struggle, accompanied by countless efforts and struggle. Moreover, you can approach any addiction in the same way, and free yourself from it effortlessly, but it is a subject that deserves to be given a dedicated space. Thus, fasting is a pretext to discover what the ego is, and to free yourself from it.
