The selfie is the symbol of an era that embodies the decline of a civilization that has become narcissistic. There is no longer any vitality in the youth who have become totally ego-centered, parading on social networks to display their plastic smile and inner emptiness. Narcissism, the obsession of receiving recognition and gratification from others, selfishly conceited vanity, is a big problem in our digital age of disembodiment and transhumanism. Look at youth and you will see the immobility, the lack of confidence, of faith, the need for recognition, the fear of failing, of being judged, the need to compare oneself. They are already concerned about the amount of their future pension, if they ever sees the color of it.. Threy are already far too weighed down by the weight of schooling. They prefer escaping and take refuge in virtual activities, it is far less frightening. There is no trace of dynamism in all this, nor any new momentum ! It looks more like premature old age.
We sanctify youth because we have grown old, psychologically. But must it be so ? Should we be a spectator of our own life or is it possible to embody something more authentic and true ? Is it possible to stay young despite the number of years ?
What does it mean to be young, and what is vitality ? Can we speak of vitality when we are looking only for security, recognition and distractions in order to flee from one's existence ? This new civilization of images and emptiness is doomed to failure. It has aborted in the egg. Many civilizations have perished in the past, the Roman Empire is an example.
There are those who in these few lines will see the message of hope, and those who will see it only as disillusionment; to each his due. Surely the individual who questions, who makes a clean sweep of the past, who is attentive, alert and aimless yet curious about everything, alive, carefree, and who maintains silence and refuses unnecessary chatter.. this individual must surely know what youth, beauty and love are, may he be 90 years old of age. A society can only survive through the intrinsic vitality of the people who inhabit it.
Stillness and fear are signs of decomposition. A great awakening is necessary to change the course of history. And in this perspective, there is nothing to expect from anyone.
Transformation has to come from within each of us.
